The story of this classic muscle maven begins on April 2, 1971 when Richard and Rosemary Alter purchased the family sports car that began as a family staple, became a muscle car of memories as it cruised across European countries, and now this restored beauty is on display at the Mid America Museum of Aviation & Transportation home.
Richard and Rosemary Alter purchased the brand new 1971 Camaro for $3,337.75, only $1 per pound! (Fun fact: New cars now cost around $100 per pound) The 1971 Camaro was deemed the “Best All-Around” car of its time, constantly at odds with its Chevrolet counterpart, the Corvette. The Camaro, on the other hand, was “the sports car four of you,” positioned as family’s sports car. And that’s exactly what it was to
The Camaro made the ultimate commitment as a true muscle car of memories as Rick’s confidant while stationed in Italy for the Air Force. With four bucket seats, Rick’s parents, children and wife hit the road on a road trip around the European continent in 1975.
The Camaro took a heavy hit from Mother Nature last September when a 100+ mph windstorm hit the hanger at the Sioux Gateway Airport. Rick captured the cosmetic damage in these unbelievable photos!
With the expert help from John Harbeck, the 1971 Camaro has been restored to better than new in only four months time, reaching completion on March 15, 2015! We are both honored & excited to have this classic beauty on display at the Mid America Museum of Aviation & Transportation.
Stop by and experience the 1971 Camaro that became a part of not only Rick Alter’s family, but also a part of the classic muscle car history, as it changed the way families looked at sports cars.
