Grants and News

City of Sioux City

BASE CHAPEL CLOSED and MUSEUM TO RECEIVE ITEMS
The museum and a local historical developer are working together to preserve the base chapel for an exhibit at the museum.  Details are not complete, but the community will be very pleased as the exhibit is built.  Storage of key elements from the museum are now stored safely at the museum, as the chapel is dismanteled for site development by the city.

The final closing was held by the city to honor the chapel's services over the years, and especially to the airmen during WWII.

MRHD and City of Sioux City

GRANT FOR NEW GATEWAY ENTRANCE
Picture
A new brick entrance on either side of the gateway into the museum parking was completed in 2025.  The entrance will make a significant improvement to way finding to the museum.  So often, the museum entrance has been referred to as a blank parking space or institution warehouse.  The new brick, stone, and rock entrance with Ballard lighting is especially beautiful at dusk.  The MISSOURI RIVER HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT funded $50,000 of a $75,000 project with their IMPACT Grant in 2024.  Additional Siouxland specific aviation STEM lessons, accessible marketing signage, roadway clean up were also part of the grant project with the City of Sioux City providing support along the roadway to the museum.
THANK YOU TO MRHD AND CITY OF SIOUX CITY / SIOUX GATEWAY AIRFIELD for the grant and matching in kind work to improve the entrance and accessibility to the air museum.  We would also like to recognize Dustin Brunsting of Brunsting Design and Aldrich Concrete for their design and workmanship.

Junior League of Siouxland and FedEx Express

GRANT FOR CAREER KIOSK
Junior League of Siouxland and Fed Ex Express have sponsored a new Career Kiosk.  Two iPads and two stands are available to use and research careers in aviation.  Career oriented websites are on the main page and linked to organizations who support career access in aviation.  Board member Stacie Hays, VP of Enrollment at Morningside University said, "the goal is to help young people, especially young women, to find and explore careers in aviation."  And her son, Jax, programmed the iPad to only access certain websites.  A dedication was held in the Fall of 2025, and featured Junior League volunteers helping young people use the kiosks. Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting at the museum dedicating the opening of the Kiosk.

History in Action: HUEY EXHIBIT EXPANDED

Picture

New 20 minute video featuring Major Bain Black
is inside the Huey for our visitors to enjoy.  with the museum Huey, which was his gunship in the Vietnam War in 1966.

With a donation from KCAU and the talent of Tim Seaman, Senior Anchor for KCAU, a Major Black's story is available to watch while sitting in the back of the helicopter.  Major Black and his wife Karen donated an oil painting depicting 66-15187 Huey in action in Vietnam over the Delta. Seaman and Black talked about the experience prior to the presentation, which is now available on a continuous 20 minute loop monitor inside the Huey.

MOVIE NIGHT & STORYTIME

Kevin Blosch, Executive Director and Kay Goldsmith, Happy Volunteer, started two new summer events.  Movie Night was offered during the summer on a Friday night as a free family activity.  Jolly Time Popcorn was a sponsor for the popcorn and many families enjoyed coming out to the 727 and watching movies together.  Kevin loved having new families find the museum through this activity.  "I want to do it again - maybe even a special winter event but for sure next summer.  Having Jolly Time Popcorn support Movie Night was a hit.  I think the Top Gun and Maverick was our most popular night."
Kay Goldsmith, happy volunteer and writing tutor for Morningside University, was responsible for beginning a new Story Time.  While just a few families came to enjoy her reading and the stories, she will continue to look for ways to reach out to families.  Kay is always singing while she rolls around and greets our visitors - thus the "Happy Volunteer" moniker.  "I want to inspire children and parents to read together.  I've always enjoyed books and ready as well as helping college students write better.  The air museum library was a major project I worked on two summers ago, and this reading project is an extension of my interests in helping the air museum attract more visitors."
