Flight 232 Committee joins Powell Broadcasting DJs & Siouxland HyVees for an all day all stations fundraiser

SIOUX CITY, IOWA (Mid America Museum of Aviation and Transportation) - On Friday, April 25, United Flight 232 Remembrance Committee will join all 15 DJ’s from Powell Broadcasting to conduct an all day live broadcast radioathon. Pam Mickelson, chair and professor of business at Morningside College represents the air museum board and co-chair of the 232 Remembrance Committee states, “this broadcast will not only provide a way for the community to contribute to the new permanent displays and gardens planned at the air museum, but also provide an opportunity for the current generation and new residents of the area to learn about an amazing Siouxland response to the crash landing of the DC10.”

On July 19, 1989, United Airlines Flight 232 experienced a catastrophic hydraulic system failure over Iowa.  UA232 with 296 souls on board was on a routine flight from Denver to Chicago. Captain Al Haynes and three other pilots used engine thrust alone to maneuver the DC10 from a normal cruse altitude of 37,000 ft to descending loops to meet Siouxland’s responders at Sioux Gateway Airport.  This summer’s schedule on July 18, 19, and 20 will include three days to reflect on the crash-landing, to learn from the Siouxland responders, and to honor those lost.

Dennis Bullock, Powell Broadcasting general manager, called Jim Wharton to plan an all station event.  Wharton is currently Development and Marketing Director at Siouxland Community Health Center and was the public relations director at Briar Cliff University at the time of the crash.  Briar Cliff housed and protected the many families and crewmembers of the flight during a time of uncertainty and tragedy.   Wharton chairs the finance and fundraising sub committee of the 232 weekend event.

On Friday, April 25th DJ’s from five Powell stations will broadcast live at five HyVee’s in Siouxland.  for a special 12 hour fundraiser.  Broadcasting will be live from 6am-6pm :  1360 KSCJ – Hamilton Hy-Vee, KSUX 105.7  – Southern Hills Mall Hy-Vee, Y Country 101.3  – Gordon Drive Hy-Vee, Q102 – The new Hy-Vee Mainstreet on Pierce, and KOOL 99.5 – South Sioux City Hy-Vee

The Mid America Museum of Aviation and Transportation is located at 2600 Expedition Drive just off Harbor Drive at the north end of the Sioux City Airport, Colonel Bud Day Field. For more information, contact Pam Mickelson at 712-274-5473 or Executive Director Larry Finley at 712-252-5300.
